Tenor Russell Thomas Debuts ‘Otello’ In Return To Atlanta Symphony

When you think of opera, you may picture horned helmets and blonde braids. But operas aren’t always performed with such theatricality. This weekend, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra continues their new season with a concert performance of Verdi’s “Otello.”

Lois Reitzes spoke with ASO music director Robert Spano about why likes to include opera in the orchestra’s programming, as well as with tenor Russell Thomas on tackling the title role of ‘Otello.’

Thomas was the ASO’s inaugural artist-in-residence during the 2014-15 season and this weekend marks his public debut in what he calls the “Mount Everest” of tenor repertory.
